College of Science

A student completing the requirements in biology education is qualified to teach high school biology. Biology education majors are advised that it is wise to select an additional developmental area, such as middle school, and an additional content area, such as Physical Science or Chemistry.

Transfer GPA and Course Requirements

Purdue admits to individual majors. Many majors require that applicants have completed specific coursework, and all have a suggested minimum GPA. The criteria for this major are listed below. Students who meet or exceed these criteria are the most competitive candidates for admission. Before applying, review the closed programs page to confirm your desired major is open to transfer students.

Minimum GPA: 2.5

Additional Requirements: Completion of at least one semester of college-level calculus equivalent to MA 16100 or MA 16500 with a grade of C or higher.

Careers

Approximately 25% of biology students proceed directly to graduate school in biology or biology-related fields.  About 45% go on to schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, or dentistry.  Still others go directly to work in a broad variety of fields. These include research or applied science positions in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Some become high school teachers, go into sales, or work for governmental regulatory agencies, zoos, or parks.
